I am not happy about this international break. But rather than fight it entirely, I’ll try to look for the positives in it.
The biggest one I can find is the return to the English national team of Emile Heskey.
You can blame it on injury and Steve McClaren not having anywhere else to turn but I can’t quite understand the moaning that came following Heskey’s return to the Three Lions.
Michael Owen has to be excited to see Heskey back. His partnership with the Wigan striker has always been productive, with Owen scoring 11 goals in their 12 appearances together.
And it’s great to see a class act like Heskey getting another chance with the national team.
Heskey, of course, handled it just as you’d expect him to, like a professional.
I’d never given up hope of a recall but you know the situation with the national team. We’ve got so many good players coming through at the minute so he’s got to pick from a lot. But it’s good, I’m enjoying every minute of it. The lads have taken me in well again, so I’m enjoying it. I’m that sort of unselfish player who will try my hardest and I think a lot of people see that in me.
Here’s hoping Heskey and Owen rekindle their old fire on the pitch on Saturday and the Wigan star will not go as long between call-ups.
